A stand-alone mystery without the normal detectives。 Kind of reminded me of the book, A Woman in White。

Not the most engaging murder mystery。 It’s essentially two people imagineering their way to a solution based on the flimsiest deductions, but the climax was satisfying。 They pull a lot of nonsense out of thin air on shallow reasoning, only for the plot to validate it by having supporting evidence leap out the wood work。 Meh。

3。5 stars。 This novel is very much a mixed bag。 On the one hand, it’s super-fun to read with some classic Christie plotting and surprising twists。 On the other hand, Christie resorts to having a villain who decides to explain everything (twice!) like in a bad crime movie。 Rather than slowly arrive at events through detection and cause-and-effect, everything is wrapped up nicely by the villain who just tells us (and the protagonists) all details we didn’t know。 It was a rather disappointing concl 3。5 stars。 This novel is very much a mixed bag。 On the one hand, it’s super-fun to read with some classic Christie plotting and surprising twists。 On the other hand, Christie resorts to having a villain who decides to explain everything (twice!) like in a bad crime movie。 Rather than slowly arrive at events through detection and cause-and-effect, everything is wrapped up nicely by the villain who just tells us (and the protagonists) all details we didn’t know。 It was a rather disappointing conclusion to an otherwise enjoyable and fast read。 On a side note, the original title was The Boomerang Clue, which at first baffled me, since boomerangs don’t appear at all in the novel。 But then I soon realized the title referred not to a literal boomerang, but to Christie’s plotting。 As usual, she is one step ahead of the reader, even in the title! 。。。more

The answer is because she would have recognized that the man writing the will wasn’t who he claimed to be。 I admit that I listened to the audiobook and missed a few key details that tie all these various plot lines together。 But even if I read the book I am not sure that it would have altered my rating because I far prefer the murder mysteries to the crime gang novels。 As is usual for a Christie book with a young male and female lead, Bobby and Frankie end up together at the end of the novel after their harrowing experience which, as is also usual for this type of novel, included Bobby being bashed on the head。 。。。more

At this novel's start, a dying man rouses for just long enough to utter the five words of the title (except in the US, where it was published as the blander-sounding The Boomerang Clue), thoroughly confusing the stranger who has found him lying at the bottom of a cliff。 The plot which spins out from there is relatively fun, although this is definitely one of author Agatha Christie's stories that only has the shape of a mystery and is not really something an enterprising reader could solve on the At this novel's start, a dying man rouses for just long enough to utter the five words of the title (except in the US, where it was published as the blander-sounding The Boomerang Clue), thoroughly confusing the stranger who has found him lying at the bottom of a cliff。 The plot which spins out from there is relatively fun, although this is definitely one of author Agatha Christie's stories that only has the shape of a mystery and is not really something an enterprising reader could solve on their own。 But the amateur leads are amusing in the Tommy and Tuppence fashion, especially if you can overlook the heavy role that luck and implausibly convincing disguises play in their adventure。[Content warning for ableism, classism, and suicide。]Find me on Patreon | Goodreads | Blog | Twitter 。。。more

This was the first Agatha Christie Book I ever read when i was about 12。 I remember being captivated by the fact that a dead man was found in a locked room。 How did that happen? Having re-read it, I realise that this is a very small part of the story。 It was a thoroughly enjoyable read with a great plot, well worth the re-read over 30 years later!

Agatha Christie is not known as the Queen of Mystery for no reason。 I have long loved her books, so I was excited to acquire it at a local thrift store a while back, and excited to read it when it made it's way to the top of my To Be Read Pile。 It did not disappoint, providing an intriguing mystery, likeable main characters, and a sufficiently shocking reveal of the whodunnit。 I highly recommend it。 Young Bobby is out for day of golf with his friend when he stumbles upon the body of a man who ha Agatha Christie is not known as the Queen of Mystery for no reason。 I have long loved her books, so I was excited to acquire it at a local thrift store a while back, and excited to read it when it made it's way to the top of my To Be Read Pile。 It did not disappoint, providing an intriguing mystery, likeable main characters, and a sufficiently shocking reveal of the whodunnit。 I highly recommend it。 Young Bobby is out for day of golf with his friend when he stumbles upon the body of a man who has fallen over the cliff near the course。 While his friend goes for help, Bobby stays with the body, and the man utters some final words, "Why didn't they ask Evans?" With those words Bobby is embroiled in the mystery of who this man is and what really happened to him。 Was it simply that he walked over the cliff without seeing the edge or did something more sinister happen。 With the help of his friend Lady Francis, Bobby sets out to solve the case, but the pair should be careful that the murder doesn't get to them before they can reveal his or her identity。 I highly recommend this one to all mystery lovers。 。。。more

Another jolly and jovial story by Agatha Christie。 Another none Poirot/ Miss Marple Story。 Whilst playing golf, Bobby comes across a man, (Mr Pritchard) who had fallen off a cliff。 Just before he died the man’s last words were “why didn’t they ask Evans”。 A rather odd thing to say。 Thus begins a rather fun murder mystery story that Bobby and his friend Frankie (Lady Francis) set off to uncover what is going on。There is something rather fun about these novels。 Over time, so much focus is put on M Another jolly and jovial story by Agatha Christie。 Another none Poirot/ Miss Marple Story。 Whilst playing golf, Bobby comes across a man, (Mr Pritchard) who had fallen off a cliff。 Just before he died the man’s last words were “why didn’t they ask Evans”。 A rather odd thing to say。 Thus begins a rather fun murder mystery story that Bobby and his friend Frankie (Lady Francis) set off to uncover what is going on。There is something rather fun about these novels。 Over time, so much focus is put on Miss Marple and Poirot that these stories tend to get passed over。 They are truly a great read。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 As with many Christie mysteries, there is a lot of contrivance built into deliberately laid false trails。 Maybe that’s what makes even her simplest stories lovely to read。 The plucky Lady Frances with the tough but sweet Bobby give sleuthing a good try, but it is probably good that a coffee farm is in their future。

It was really good like any Agatha Christie, but nowhere near some of her best。
